Museo Sugbo

Museo Sugbo is housed at what was once called Carcel de Cebu, the provincial jail of cebu. Designed in 1869 by Domingo de Escondrillas, the lone architect in cebu at the time, the carcel de cebu was originally proposed as the carcel del distrito, the main prison for the visayas district. this accounts for its relatively large size at the time it was built. after a flurry of endorsements and independent review in manila, the project was approved and construction probably commenced around 1871. it is believed that most of the coral stone blocks from the parian church-which was demolished in 1878 after the bishop of cebu won a long-drawn court case against its parishioners in the 1850s-were used to build parts of the carcel. after twenty years of use, a renovation was ordered in 1892, which added more buildings behind the main structure that now serves as the first six galleries if the museum.
records are not clear as to when the second story of the main building was added. but the architectural design suggests this to be during the american colonial period.
the carcel de cebu housed not only criminals in its 135 year history. during the revolution, many of the katipuneros were incarcerated here without trial and many of them were eventually executed in nearby carreta cemetery. during the early years of the american period, the carcel served as a stable for horses competing in the hipodromo nearby. but it was eventually used once again as a prison, both for the city and the province. during the japanese occupation, guerrillas were imprisoned here after enduring torture under the hands of the kempei-tei, the japanese secret police. after the war, many of the collaborators in cebu were also imprisoned here. from the 1950s to 1976, the front section of the carcel served as the city jail, while the three structures behind were used as the provincial hail.
the carcel changed names twice, first during the american to the post-war periods when it was called the cebu provincial jail. in the 1980s, the name was changed to cebu provincial detention and rehabilitation center (CPDRC).
the transfer of CPDRC to a more spacious and modern prison complex in december 2004 occasioned the conversion of carcel de cebu by Gov. gwendolyn garcia fittingly into museo sugbo, the repository of cebuano heritage, a feat that was achieved when the first four galleries of the museum were inaugurated on august 5, 2008.
on august 13, 2009, gov. gwendolyn garcia and dr. ambeth ocampo, chair of the national historical institute, led dignitaties in unveiling a national historical marker at museo sugbo. the governor and ocampo also inaugaurated the visayas branch of the museum of philippine political history. directly opposite this branch museum, the governor and national museum director corazon alvina also inaugurated the national museum cebu branch galleries. both museum branches occupy separate buildings within the museo sugbo complex. two special exhibitions were also inaugurated during this event. the sen. vicenter rama memorabilia and the gregorio and jovito abellana memorabilia, in two separate galleries.
Also inaugurated during this event was the well of good fortune and happiness on a psanish-era well that was unearthed when the rear portion of the museo sugbo complex was being spruced up in 2009.
The 2009 event added four more galleries to the museo, bringing the total of 10. two more galleries are currently being developed and set of inauguration in 2010. a provincial art gallery and the cebu media gallery. a reproduction of prison life is also being planned within one of the bartolinas (isolation cells) in the former prison complex. one of these bartolinas is also being developed in to a gift shop.

Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral

The Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral is the ecclesiastical seat of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Cebu in Cebu, Philippines. Cebu was established as a diocese on August 14, 1595. It was elevated as a metropolitan archdiocese on April 28, 1934 with the dioceses of Dumaguete, Maasin,Tagbilaran, and Talibon as suffragans.
Construction of the cathedral took many years due to frequent interruptions, brought about by lack of funds and other unexpected events. At one time, funds meant for the building of the cathedral were diverted to the moro wars. The death of an incumbent bishop who spearheaded the construction/reconstruction and vacancies in the office were also factors.
The architecture of the church is typical of Spanish colonial churches in the country, namely, squat and with thick walls to withstand typhoons and other natural calamities. The facade features a trefoil-shaped pediment, which is decorated with carved relieves of floral motifs, an IHS inscription and a pair ofgriffins. The Spanish Royal Coat of Arms is emblazoned in low relief above the main entrance, reflecting perhaps the contribution of the Spanish monarch to its construction.
During World War II, much of the cathedral was destroyed by Allied bombings of the city. Only the belfry (built in 1835), the facade, and the walls remained. It was quickly rebuilt in the 1950s under the supervision of architect Jose Ma. Zaragosa, during the incumbency of Archbishop Gabriel Reyes.
In 1982, a mausoleum was built at the back of the sacristy at the initiation of Archbishop Julio Cardinal Rosales. It serves as a final resting place for the remains of Cebu's bishops and clergy. Cardinal Rosales, who died three months after inauguration of the mausoleum, is interred there along with Archbishop Manuel Salvador, a coadjutor archbishop of Cebu, and Archbishop Mariano Gaviola, the archbishop of Lipa (1981–1993). The remains of Bishop Juan Bautista Gorordo, the first Filipino and Cebuano bishop of Cebu, are also interred there.
The cathedral was renovated recently for the 75th anniversary celebration on April 28, 2009 of the elevation of Cebu into an archdiocese. An application is pending at the Vatican for the cathedral's elevation into a minor basilica in honor of St. Vitalis, an early Christian martyr. His feast day coincides with the day the image of the Sto. Niño de Cebu was found almost 450 years ago, as well as the anniversary of the elevation of Cebu into an archdiocese.

There's nothing to worry about anything also, because many police men rove around the city to secure the locals and the foreigners safety.

Cebu Provincial Capitol....
“The Authority of the Government Emanates from the People.”
This famous line has always been identified with the Cebu Provincial Capitol Building, being the inscription visible on the concave façade of this American-era government building.
Declared a National Historical Landmark, the Cebu Provincial Capitol is known as one of the most beautiful Capitol buildings in the Philippines.
It has been the seat of government of the Province of Cebu since it was built in 1937 during the incumbency of Gov. Sotero Cabahug. The historic structure sustained damages during World War II but was immediately rehabilitated after.
The view of the Provincial Capitol building has evolved over the years as communities around it developed. Older photographs of the building show only Cebu City’s mountains behind the grandiose white edifice pattered after the US Capitol, but the rise of modern structures at the Capitol area has not diminished the beauty of this imposing and majestic building at the end of Osmeña Boulevard.
It was designed by the late famous Filipino architect Juan Marcos Arellano, who was also the man behind structures like Manila’s Metropolitan Theater, the National Museum of the Philippines and the Manila Central Post Office Building.
The Cebu Provincial Capitol building has a U shape with three levels at the main building, capped by a dome and flanked by two-level wings. Tall columns rise from each end of the façade – the left one carrying a male statue while the right one carries a female statue, both dressed in Roman costumes.
On each side of the entrance are stairs that lead to a tall foyer under the dome which opens up to a balcony that looks out into the Capitol’s rectangular grounds and the street that leads to midtown and downtown Cebu City.
Aside from housing the Office of the Governor and other offices, the Capitol building has a Social Hall where most Provincial Government functions.
The Capitol building was inaugurated on June 14, 1938 by Philippine Commonwealth President Manuel L. Quezon who commemorated the event by planting a tree.
Cebu City Hall...

Taoist Temple

Built in 1972, the Cebu Taoist Temple is located in Beverly Hills Subdivision in Cebu City, Philippines. The temple was built by Cebu's substantia Chinese community. With an elevation of 300 meters above sea level, the temple is a towering, multi-tiered, multi-hued attraction accessible by three separate winding routes.
Unlike the neighboring Phu Sian Temple, the Taoist temple is open to the worshipers and non-worshipers alike. A ritual among devotees is where one prays to the gods to grant one's wish. The ritual includes washing of hands, going inside the chapel barefoot and dropping two blocks of wood. If the blocks of wood are both face up then one could make a wish. If not then it is not yet the time for one's wish to be granted and one has to come to the temple some other time.
The temple is the center of worship for Taoism, the religion which follows the teachings of the ancient Chinese philosopher, Lao Zi. Another ritual among Taoist devotees, which is done during Wednesdays and Sundays, is the climbing of its 81 steps (representing the 81 chapters of Taoism scriptures) to light joss sticks and have their fortune read by the monks.
Some guide books and travel agencies offer trips to the temple or as a side-trip in a tour around Cebu City. But it is more popular with grade school students. No student who grew up in Cebu City or the neighboring Mandaue City has not gone to the temple in any one of their field trips.
The entrance to the temple is a replica of the Great Wall of China. The temple includes a chapel, a library, a souvenir shop and a wishing well. The spacious balconies offer a scenic view of the downtown Cebu.

Construction of the Church
  • 1566 - the first church believed to be built on the site where the image of the Holy Child was found was destroyed by fire. It was said to be built by Fr. Diego de Herrera using wood and nipa.
  • 1605 - Fr. Pedro Torres started the construction of a new church, again made of wood and nipa. It was finished in 1626 but was again burned in 1628.
  • 1628 - Fr. Juan Medina started the construction of another church, using stone and bricks, a great innovation at that time. The construction was stopped because the structure was found to be defective - the bricks used seemingly "melted" upon contact with air.
  • February 29, 1735 - Father Provincial Bergaño, Governor-General Fernando Valdes, Bishop Manuel Antonio Decio y Ocampo of Cebu and Juan de Albarran Prior of the Santo Niño, started the foundations of the present church, using stone. A lot of help came. Fr. Antonio Lopez, prior of San Nicolas, assisted also together with the people of his district. The residents of Talisay also did four weeks of work and Fr. Francisco Aballe also tried to help with his parishioners from Mactan.

Devotion to Sto. Niño
The Chapter held on August 6, 1578 recommended to all the fathers "that prayers to the Sto. Niño be offered every month as was the custom before." In 1641, the father provincial ordered that the feast of the Sto Niño be celebrated on January 14 “with all the possible solemnity, mass and sermon, since He deserves all the affection from us, being the Dulcisimo and most affectionate patron of our province."
Fr. Nicolas de la Cuadra (1731) was very instrumental in spreading the devotion of the Sto. Niño. He led an exemplary life, had writings and solemn rites which he established in the sanctuary, and acquired many jewels for the decoration of the statue.
The first novena to the Santo Niño was introduced by Fr. Mateo Diez, rector of the sanctuary in 1889, under the Cebuano title Novena ug pagdayeg sa Sto. Niño Jesus nga guisimba sa cyudad sa Sugbu , printed in Mandaluyong, Asilo de Huerfanos , 1888. This novena has been reprinted countless times.
Up to this time, the number of Sto. Niño devotees who follow the novena and attend mass every Friday keeps on increasing.

Style of the Church
  • Facade - a blending of Muslim, Romanesque and neo-classical features - all set in what has otherwise been described as a high degree of integration. The façade is preserved in its original stone texture and natural color, conveying an air of simplicity of line and elegance.
  • Bell tower - serves as a counterbalance to the convent located on the opposite far end. It has two blind and open windows alternating in shape, ending up in triangular pinnacles with a circular disc crowned by balusters and a bulbous dome of Muslim influence.
  • Center section - the focus of attention. The arched main entrance is balanced by the side rectangular corners. A double-edged triangular pediment crowns the facade.

My Cake Adventure At Chedz

Isn't these cakes looks yummy? well, i guarantee you that it does not only looks yummy but also tastes yummy.... This cakes are the best one I've ever tasted, and they are from chedz cakes of cebu... I love it because they took baking seriously.. I have tasted many cakes already (commercial or non-commercial) but these are the best because each cake has their own personality. Like for example the cebu mango cake, it has a unique taste and it doesn't overpower the mango, not like other cakes that you can't even feel there is a mango in it, chedz cebu mango cake has flavor of a mango, pieces of mango and tastes mango... I'm also a fan of their cappuccino cake because not only im a cappuccino lover but also because it has the right sweetness. And of course the ube (yam) cake and the black forest, has the right amount of sweetness and again unique.. These cakes are to die for... and honestly, if there will be an occasion i will definitely contact no other than but.... chedz cakes..
